What if you had an abundance of wonderful writing prompts and a beautiful journal to write in with your favorite pen? As you read these 52 imaginative weekly writing prompts based on classic literature books, you’ll be inspired to take up that pen and put words on paper. Or if you’re more digitally inclined, open a screen and type in your ideas.

The writing prompts for 2024 were based on one word. Your imagination could take you anywhere through word association. This year, in 2025, the prompts are based on partial classic literature titles, leaving you to fill in the blank with a new train of thought.

Creative Writing Prompts for 2025 Inspired by Classic Literature That Will Ignite Your Imagination

Don’t you just love to find new and unusual connections with things? Sometimes creating the unexpected with a new idea will lead to fantastic writing. You can turn a trope upside down, like a fairy tale princess who can save herself, or a superhero who loses their powers.

This year, we looked at lists of the top 100 classic literature books everyone should read, and hand-plucked a few titles from the lists.

Then we hand-plucked a few words out of the titles, leaving you with a beginning, but not an end. A classic, but something new. An unfinished work for you to finish.

The Man in the _____.

To Kill a _____.

You get the idea.

Once you’ve settled on the prompt you want to work with, you can spend a few moments, (or hours), brainstorming new connections.

Just to add a bit of a fun twist to this writing journal, I decided to use parts of titles of classic literature books. There are 52, one for each week, and a few bonus prompts. Most of them you’ll probably recognize immediately. However, some of them may be part of a title for more than one book.

I’ve included a mind-map to help us think of different aspects of each title. “To Kill a _____” could go in so many different ways.

Once I’ve exhausted several different ideas, I settle on one, and roll with it.

This mind map organizer helps to surface new ideas and connections.

Your journal can be as messy or as beautiful as you like. My journals from previous years have been messy. I scratch words out, scribble in the margins, bleed highlighter across sections to draw my eyes back to a particular phrase.

This year, my intention is to write in my journal and illustrate it, too. This is quite an aspiration for a person who can barely draw a stick person, but I love a challenge!

If you prefer digital, do that. For me it depends on the day and my mood. I’ve included an editable PDF and a PowerPoint version. You can type in either one. The PowerPoint can be uploaded into Google Slides (™) or another digital form you use.

If you’re a teacher, you can use these prompts with your students. They’re great for high school levels. One per week is all you need. Or use these prompts for yourself and your own private journaling. These work well as a warmup in a writing group, after which there might be a nice conversation about the differences people perceive the prompts. The same goes for writing clubs, photography classes, and art classes.

Do whatever feels right for you. Are you seeing a theme here?
